Coast Development Authority’s mandate is to provide integrated development planning, coordination and implementation of projects and programmes within the Coast Region, including the southern part Garissa County and the Kenya’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). An exclusive economic zone is a sea zone prescribed by the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea over which a state has special rights regarding the exploration and use of marine resources, including energy production from water and wind. It stretches from the baseline out to 200 nautical miles from its coast.

CDA is a state corporation established by an Act of Parliament.

CDA identifies projects to implement through stakeholder engagement with local communities, government directives and global initiatives.

Funding may be sought through development partners, the private sector or the National Treasury.

CDA is currently hosting 15 interns with respect to the presidential directive. CDA does not offer scholarships and bursaries. However, the county governments offer limited bursaries.

CDA does not offer grants to community groups.

Coast Development Authority is a State Corporation and therefore CDA’s mandate derives from the national government; with some programmes being identified as being nationally funded such as Kenya Climate Change Adaptation Programme (KCCAP). Another nationally funded programme is the Integrated Fruit Processing Plant (IFPP).

Improve their standards of living in several ways, such as through training farmers in aquaculture; enhancing access to medical services; supporting small and medium-sized businesses by imparting basic entrepreneurship skills; constructing Ferro-cement tanks, water pans, and djabias for harvesting rainwater; tree-planting and finally, supporting through catchment conservation and river bank rehabilitation.
